Is your home built between 1880 - 1950?

Knob and Tube wiring was the standard method of wiring during this era. Ceramic knobs and tubes were used with cloth conductors that don’t have today’s safety features. It is unsuitable for modern home electrical needs and if tampered with or used improperly it poses a fire hazard. It is best to replace it completely and live with peace of mind in your electrical system. 

Does your home have ungrounded wiring?

Most wiring methods post 1950 - 1980 did not have an equipment grounding conductor (EGC), or have an undersized equipment grounding conductor. The purpose of the EGC is to provide a safe path for electricity to flow back to the source in case of wiring or equipment failure. If there is no path back then a faulty device or metal object may remain energized and could shock you. This is unsafe and is recommended to be updated to modern wiring with an EGC. 

Does you home have aluminum wiring?

Aluminum wiring was used as an alternative for copper wiring in homes built between the 1960’s to 1970’s when there was a copper shortage. This aluminum wiring caused many house fires and is unsafe to be used in homes. While some companies offer “bandaid” solutions to aluminum wiring, the sure way to deal with aluminum wiring is to replace it. 

Does your home have cloth wiring?

Cloth wiring was popular between the 1950’s - 1970’s. The cloth insulation deteriorates over time as it becomes brittle and the electrical wires becomes exposed to combustible materials and pests that can easily chew through the cloth wrapping. This type of wiring also had asbestos in the paper material that was used and poses health and fire hazards. It is necessary to replace if you have this type of wiring.

Does your home have signs of poor workmanship in the wiring?

We run across many homes that have been updated or remodeled with newer wiring but unfortunately the work was not performed by a qualified electrician. Even with new wiring the proper methods need to be used otherwise the home becomes more prone to electrical hazards. If you have open wire connections in the attic or crawl space, multiple junction boxes throughout the home, or malfunctioning outlets or switches, your home wiring may need to be replaced to assure safety to the residents.
